Today, Professor Usman Yusuf spoke in-depth with Arise TV on the security issues that some regions of Nigeria are now dealing with.
The Professor, a former executive secretary of the NHIS, asserts that the military cannot resolve either the banditry problem in the North West or the IPOB issue.
He thought that the best approach to handle these issues was to speak with these organizations and work out a solution with them.
Furthermore, he stated the Labour Party’s Mr. Peter Obi’s support for initiatives to quell IPOB agitation by remaining in the South East in the event that he lost the election.
His own words as seen on Arise TV this morning, “Neither the IPOB problem nor the banditry problem will be resolved by the military. Atiku is fully aware that civil officials will need to enter and address the issues they brought in.
“Another issue is that there aren’t many military and other security personnel on the ground.
“You can’t buy Tucano jets and drop bombs from the sky if there aren’t enough people on the ground to guard the ungoverned areas.
“To staff all of these locations, we need more personnel on the ground.
“How many police officers are assigned to the task of protecting the large men? Police reform is necessary.
“I’m basically arguing that it should be up to the elders to sit down and talk with these agitators rather than the military.
“Because some of the agitations from the North East have subsided, I believe Peter Obi’s rise to prominence is good for this nation.
“Igbo youths are now seeing a pathway and my hope and prayer are that Peter Obi when he loses the election will continue to get engaged and quieten the IPOB agitation.”
