Andre Onana announces retirement from Cameroonian national team football

The Cameroonian national team’s goalkeeper Andre Onana, has announced his retirement following a dispute with coach Rigobert Song during the World Cup.

Despite their late victory over Brazil in Group G, the Indomitable Lions were unable to advance past the Group stage.

Without Onana, the Lions gave up three goals, however when he was in goal, he only allowed one goal from Breel Embolo, a fellow Cameroonian.

Onana’s goalkeeping technique caused a rift between the keeper and the Cameroonian legend.

The 26-year-old is more active and plays like the team’s 11th player at club level, which allows him to receive more touches on the ball.

Rigobert insisted that Onana play a more conventional style of keeping, which would require him to make fewer appearances, but Onana is refusing to alter his manner of play.

Taking to his social media pages, Onana said: “After endless hours of training, endless trips and a lot perseverance, I can proudly say that I have fulfilled my great dream.

“But every story, however beautiful it may be, has to end. And my story with the Cameroonian national team has come to an end.

“Players come and go, names are fleeting, but Cameroon comes before any person or player.

“Cameroon remains eternal and so does my love for the national team and for our people who have always supported us…

“My feeling will never change. My Cameroonian heart will continue to beat and wherever I go I will always fight to lift the flag of Cameroon as high as possible.”

After merely playing in the Indomitable Lions’ opening game against Switzerland, Onana took a flight home.
