How Suspected Ritualist Killed, Dismembered Body Of 32-Year-Old-Lady On Her Birthday

A 32-year-old lady identified as Dorcas Shangev, has been reportedly killed by Suspected ritualists.

The deceased was murdered and dismembered on her birthday in the Adem village, near the Welfare Quarters area of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

It was gathered that the deceased went missing about a week ago until her dismembered body was found dumped at Adem village after her body parts were removed by her murderers.

A family source in Makurdi, who relayed the events leading to her disappearance and death, said the incident was already generating controversy as her family had started questioning the manner her remains were recovered and buried by the authorities.

According to the family source, “We gathered that on July 14, 2023, Dorcas escorted a friend of hers to the burial of her brother-in-law. They returned to Makurdi on Saturday after the burial. When they returned, she didn’t go back home but slept at her friend’s house around the modern market area.

“The next day, July 16, 2023, was her 32nd birthday. She left her friend’s house with a promise to call her friend by 3 p.m. so that they can sit out.

“However, when she didn’t call back as arranged, the friend called to find out why she hadn’t called, but she didn’t pick up her calls. The friend kept calling the whole of Sunday and continued till Monday.

“On Monday, the friend got a message that was sent from the lady’s (deceased) phone, but later on realized that she may not have been the one that actually sent the message, asking her to come to a certain address and when her friend got to the place, she discovered that she was dead and dismembered and some of her body parts scattered all over the place.

“While in a state of shock, she called her husband to the scene and the husband in turn called the police and it was discovered that her eyes, ears, tongue, and breasts among other body parts were removed by whoever may have perpetrated the act.

“When the Police saw that the corpse had started to decompose, they called in the Benue State Environmental Sanitation Agency, BENSESA, which came, gathered the body parts into a plastic bag, and buried her.

“The deceased lady had been through a lot in recent times. She had gone through one trauma to the other. Only recently, she lost her elder sister.”

Contacted, the acting General Manager of BENSESA, Mr. Martin Tseuma, who confirmed the development, and explained that the agency buried the lady on the directives of the police.

Hear him: “We didn’t recover the body. The police at ‘B’ Division wrote to us that they have discovered an unknown corpse at Adem village, near Welfare Quarters.

“It was based on the report that they (Police) said we should evacuate the body for burial and that was what we did.

“We didn’t contact anyone because how do we know the family? But the family came to my office this (Monday) morning and I directed them to go back to the police from where we got the story of the unclaimed corpse. We were working based on the report from the police.”

Court Grants Emefiele N20million Bail

The Federal High Court Sitting in Lagos has granted bail to the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, in the sum of N20m with one surety in like sum.
Justice Nicholas Oweibo granted bail after listening to the submissions of Emefiele’s counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN).

The judge rejected the Federal Government’s claim that Emefiele was a flight risk. He ruled that the government failed to provide any facts to support its claim.

Emefiele, 61, had also pleaded “not guilty” to the two-count charge of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition filed against him by the Federal Government.

In his submissions, Daudu had urged the court to grant bail on self-recognizance or other liberal terms, pending the hearing and determination of the trial.

He said, “There is no counter affidavit from the Federal Government opposing bail. Also, the defendant is a renowned banker and can only stay at his house, he can’t travel anywhere.”

But counsel to the FG, Nkiru Jones-Nebo in an oral submission opposed the bail application insisting that the prosecution had not been given time to respond in line with the provisions of fair hearing enshrined in the constitution.

She also said that the prosecution had information that the defendant’s refusal to hand in his passport suggests his capacity to evade and abscond from his trial.

“As the governor of the CBN, he is a powerful man and can intimidate the witnesses. Granting him bail will intimidate the witnesses of the prosecution who have come forward to give evidence. He can evade trial based on his antecedents. We urge the court to dismiss the bail application,” she argued.

The judge also ordered that Emefiele be held at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, pending the perfection of his bail.

The trial has been fixed for November 14.

President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele as the apex bank chief on June 9, 2023. A day after, the Department of State Services (DSS) confirmed that the embattled, suspended CBN chief was in its custody.

An Abuja High Court on July 13, 2023, subsequently ordered that the secret police charge Emefiele to court within one week or release him.

Hours after, the DSS said Emefiele has been charged to court in compliance with the court order.

Royal Biographers Reveals Why Prince Harry ‘Won’t Divorce’ Meghan Markle

A lot of rumors have been circulating on the internet recently suggesting that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are heading for a divorce, or that their relationship might be on the rocks.

Several royal biographers, however, have recently debunked these, including Tom Bower and Angela Levin.

According to Bower (who wrote Revenge about the Duchess of Sussex), although it’s unlikely that Harry will ever part from his wife, she allegedly obtained what she initially sought from their union.

The investigative journalist believes that although the Spare author, 38, and Suits alum, 41, may take up separate, individual career projects, any speculation about them divorcing is likely unfounded.

“The last thing Harry would want would be a divorce,” Bower recently told Ok! Magazine. He added: “I’m sure he doesn’t want to come back to Britain.”

The Sussexes Are Unlikely To Divorce, Despite Rumors, Royal Experts Say
Levin, the author of the biography entitled Harry: A Biography of a Prince, concurs that a divorce is unlikely to occur between the couple, who share son Archie, 4, and daughter Lilibet, 2.

Levin suggests that while Markle may have achieved her personal goals from their relationship, leaving her husband now could be damaging to her public image.

During a segment on GB News, Levin said: “There are rumors coming from Meghan’s side that ‘[Harry’s] decided he doesn’t want to be in the spotlight anymore. You won’t see much of him. Meghan is used to it and she does very well, but Harry doesn’t.”

The writer claimed: “This is really unpleasant but I think it might very well be what is going on — that she’s got enough of it now and she’s had what she wants from him. She can go forward with her new PR and all the things that are going to be offered to her and love it, and Harry we will hardly see.”

Levin went on: “But she’s not going to split with him. Of course, she won’t because if she does, she loses a lot of people’s interest because that’s what they’re really interested in. And I think it’s tragic.”

Ghana’s Minister Of Sanitation Resigns Admist Alleged Theft Of $1 Million In Cash From Her Residence

Ghana’s Minister of Sanitation, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, tendered her resignation over the weekend following an investigation into an alleged theft of more than $1 million in cash from her residence last year.

The case has drawn criticism from Ghana’s opposition, who questioned why a minister would keep such a large sum of money at home.

Dapaah denied any involvement in the alleged crimes, but the incident raised concerns about her position as a government official. In her resignation statement on Saturday, Dapaah stated that she did not want the matter to become a distraction for the government’s work.

The two domestic workers accused of stealing the cash, along with 300,000 euros and millions of local Ghanaian cedis, are currently facing trial.

The case has stirred public attention and debate, with court documents detailing the alleged theft from the minister’s bedroom, including clothing.

While Dapaah clarified that the reported figures do not accurately reflect what was reported to the police, she acknowledged the significance of the incident given her position in the government.

Her resignation comes at a challenging time for President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, as Ghana grapples with its worst economic crisis in years, leading the country to seek a $3 billion loan from the IMF.

President Akufo-Addo accepted Dapaah’s resignation and commended her for her loyalty and dedication.

However, opposition leader John Dramani Mahama, who is running as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the 2024 election, criticized the incident as “scandalous” and questioned the rationale behind keeping such large amounts of hard currency at home.

Baffour Agyeman-Duah, a good governance advocate, called on the ombudsman to investigate the case further.

The involvement of a high-ranking public official has sparked public interest, and there is a growing demand for transparency and accountability in the matter.

Musk Unveils New Name, Logo For Twitter

Twitter’s owner, Elon Musk and its new CEO said Sunday that the social media network would ditch its bird logo, be rebranded with the name X and move quickly into payments, banking and commerce.

Founded in 2006, Twitter takes its name from the sound of birds chattering, and it has used avian branding since its early days, when the company bought a stock symbol of a light blue bird for $15, according to the design website Creative Bloq.

Tweeting a picture of the company’s new logo – a white X on a black background – late Sunday night, Twitter chief executive Linda Yaccarino said “X is here! Let’s do this.”

Also late Sunday night, Musk changed his profile picture to the company’s new logo, which he described as “minimalist art deco,” and changed his Twitter bio to “X.com,” which now redirects to twitter.com.

Musk had earlier tweeted that “If a good enough X logo is posted tonight, we’ll make (it) go live worldwide tomorrow.”

Musk also tweeted that under the site’s new identity, a post would be called “an X.”

The changes were not visible on the website as of 0630 GMT Monday.

Musk had already named Twitter’s parent company the X Corporation, and previously said his takeover of the social media giant was “an accelerant to creating X, the everything app” — a reference to the X.com company he founded in 1999, a later version of which went on to become payments giant PayPal.

Such an app could still function as a social media platform, and also include messaging and mobile payments.

“Powered by AI, X will connect us in ways we’re just beginning to imagine,” Yaccarino tweeted earlier on Sunday.

Yaccarino, an advertising sales executive at NBCUniversal who Musk poached last month to become Twitter’s CEO, said the social media platform was on the cusp of broadening its scope.

“X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities,” Yaccarino tweeted.

– New revenue streams –

Since Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion last October, the platform’s advertising business has partially collapsed as marketers soured on mass firings at the company that gutted content moderation — as well as on Musk’s management style.

In response, the billionaire SpaceX boss has moved toward introducing payments and commerce through the platform in a search for new revenue.

Twitter is thought to have around 200 million daily active users, but it has suffered repeated technical failures since the 52-year-old Tesla founder bought the app and sacked much of its staff.

Since then, many users and advertisers alike have responded adversely to the social media site’s new charges for previously free services, its changes to content moderation and the return of previously banned right-wing accounts.

Musk said this month that Twitter had lost roughly half of its advertising revenue since he took control in October.

Facebook parent Meta also this month launched its own text-based platform, called Threads, which has up to 150 million users, according to some estimates.

But the amount of time users spend on the rival app has plummeted in the weeks since its launch, according to data from market analysis firm Sensor Tower.

13 soldiers killed by suicide bomber in Somalia.

In an attack that was claimed by the militant group al Shabaab, a suicide bomber in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, wounded at least 20 people while killing at least 13 troops inside a military academy on Monday.

The al Qaeda-linked group has been driven from vast swaths of land in southern Somalia as a result of a military operation began by government forces and allied militiamen in 2022, but the militants have continued to conduct deadly raids.

Al-Shabaab fighters have increased their attacks in recent weeks as the military effort against them has paused while the army prepares a second phase of the offensive.

At a facility south of Mogadishu in late May, they murdered at least 54 Ugandan peacekeepers. One of the biggest cities in the nation, Baidoa, was under siege for about two weeks. Additionally, this month they have conducted a number of raids in Mogadishu.

The Jale Siyaad military academy was the target of the explosion on Monday. A soldier at the military hospital in Mogadishu who only provided his name as Ahmed claimed to have the bodies of 13 troops who died and 20 more who were injured in the explosion.

According to Captain Ali Farah, who knew some of the victims, they were from the Lower Shabelle region and had gone to the city for training. He claimed to be aware of 10 fatalities to date.

“The soldiers were being counted in the queue when the suicide bomber blew himself up,” Farah said.

In a statement, Al Shabaab claimed that the bomber had injured 124 people in addition to killing 73 soldiers. Usually, the group provides casualty estimates that are far higher than those made available by the authorities.

Since 2006, Al Shabaab has fought to overthrow Somalia’s national government and install its own system of governance based on a strict application of Islamic Sharia law.

Anthrax Is Here: Eat Ponmo And Die- NCDC

Dr Ifedayo Adetifa is the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC. In this interview, Adetifa speaks on the case of anthrax discovered in a farm in Niger State, insisting that people should refrain from eating animal hides, also known as ponmo, bush meat, and dead animals “you did not kill”, reports Saturday Vanguard.

How do you describe the case in Niger State? Is it an outbreak?

We are worried about any case of anthrax; one case we have at the moment is an outbreak. In this case, our colleagues in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development received word of ill animals and dead animals and went to investigate. Within a 48-hour period, a diagnosis of anthrax was made and immediate remedial action to ensure the safe disposal of the animals and products.

The process of recalling the product that was processed in the facility also started. We were notified to look after the human health aspect because this is a disease that crosses both the human and animal health divide. Therefore, we are taking a one-health approach to the response.

What is the magnitude?

Every disease often starts with an index case. Sometimes you may know that case, sometimes you may see other cases that have resulted from that case.

In this context, this is the first animal with which we have diagnosed the condition and it is possible that there are other animals due to the fact that there was significant movement of animals in preparation for the last religious feast, Ileya.

It is possible that the infected animals from parts of the region where anthrax has already been reported may have made their way into the country, especially for animals that were brought in across the borders.

The advisory is for all animal owners around this farm and beyond that may have animals that are sick or that have died or animals that have been slaughtered whose blood did not clot to notify veterinary services immediately because this is most likely a case of animal anthrax.

Is it possible that anthrax is in other states and yet to be discovered by you and your team?

This is possible just as it is possible for anything. If you are talking about theoretical possibility, yes it is possible that there may be other cases. We can only react to what we know, and as part of the response to this, we can sensitize people to increase the threshold for reporting should they see animals that look suspicious so that veterinary public service can step in and make a diagnosis where it is necessary; then link the human health actions to it as soon as we have the confirmation of the animal’s disease.

What we can do now is work with Niger State public health authorities to make sure we get a detailed list of contacts of the animals in Niger State with a view of placing them on preventive treatment so that they don’t come down with anthrax.

What if the herders don’t bother about reporting cases or cannot access the facilities?

I think to an extent that may be an unfair generalization. Herders actually care about their animals and are sometimes even accused of caring for their animals more than themselves. This disease, if it would kill animals, would affect the livelihood of herders or people who manage livestock. The economic losses are significant and people who look after animals tend to report or seek help when their animals start to die. Indeed, anthrax can wipe an entire herd when actions are not taken. If you are thinking about the theoretical possibility, herders may be in far remote places when things start to happen before they can report or seek help but once they do that, veterinary services are equipped with vaccines to prevent other animals from dying.

Herders won’t be reporting to NCDC, they will be reporting to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Also, some states have a Ministry of Livestock. There is a connection between people in animal husbandry and veterinary services in most states. It is an economic issue for people who look after animals and once they start to die, they try to report and find out why. What we hope to achieve is that anywhere people see acutely ill animals or animals dying, they should notify animal and human health authorities. If they have access to human health authorities, they should please report because they can reach out to their animal health colleagues to sensitize them on the report received and get them to intervene.

When Nigerians see sick animals or dead animals that don’t look like they have been killed by anyone, they should please notify human health or animal health authorities immediately and the animal should not be handled or touched.

How do you think anthrax got here so soon and out of the blues?
Anthrax exists in nature. The bacteria have the ability to make it exist in forms that make it very resistant to climatic or other extreme conditions and can survive in the soil for decades. The bacteria that causes anthrax is naturally occurring. Typically, they are brought to the surface when people dig or interfere with the soil or when animals are feeding or grazing. When they ingest the spores or inhale the spores of this bacterium, the animals can get infected. It is in recognition of the naturally occurring bacteria that there have been efforts to weaponize and use it in terrorist attacks. It was not developed as a bioweapon, anthrax actually occurs in nature.

If this is the first case, is this bacteria native to Nigeria?
As I said, there is anthrax in the environment. It is not that we have not had cases, we have not had cases for decades, but anthrax has happened in Nigeria. The typical nature of outbreaks, when they occur, is associated with the movement of animals that may be infected themselves. In the case of this farm in Niger State, there is a history in the timeline of the introduction of new animals into the farm. Following the interaction, existing animals appear to have come down with the infection and die. We know that there is anthrax already in the sub-region and we have already issued an advisory. There were cases of anthrax already reported in Northern Ghana, and parts of Togo as well. Herders move across the sub-region and when there are festivals or occasions that result in an increase in demand for livestock, there will be mass importation from bordering states. If infected, it can introduce anthrax to a population of animals that are susceptible. Anthrax is prevented in animals by vaccination. In other places where there are high levels of vaccinated animals, there are fewer cases of anthrax.
Is it something that occurs seasonally and how long will it take before it disappears?

Anthrax isn’t seasonal. It is naturally occurring. A susceptible animal is needed to be exposed to anthrax pores that may be present in the soil around where it is feeding or importation of an infected animal that mixes with a pool of other susceptible animals. The cause of events is determined by the response. So long as there is the ability to detect cases when it occurs, veterinary and human public health interventions can be mounted. In this case, animal health surveillance picked up and made a diagnosis of anthrax within 48 hours of notifications of animals dying.Dead animals have been safely disposed of, meat products available on that farm have been safely disposed of and meat products that may have left the farm are being targeted for recall. There is ring vaccination of animals in the environs of this farm to make sure that inadvertent spread is avoided. For human health, all contacts are being tracked with a view of giving them preventive treatment to prevent any human cases from ensuing. If all of those are effective, then we are better placed to bring this outbreak under control. We are alerting people beyond Niger State and we are sensitising healthcare workers to look out for human cases or animal cases to quickly ensure that identification is made and the necessary interventions are brought to bear to prevent further spread and human transmission where it is possible.

How strongly would you say people should be conscious of eating ‘ponmo’ or bush meat?

What we are saying is do not eat sick animals at all. Sick animals contain anthrax and animals that have died from anthrax contain anthrax. Anthrax is present in their skin, hair and meat. The people who work with hides and skin are at risk of anthrax if it came from a dead animal. At this point in time that we have a confirmed case, we are saying look out for the meat that you buy.If you like bush meat, this could be a time to take a break from it, particularly if you don’t catch it yourself. For livestock, we ask that they be properly inspected and people who own animals should not take sick animals for slaughter. How much coordination does the agency have with state infectious diseases officers as regards going to slaughter slabs to administer vaccines and is there a threat of transference from animals to humans if there is interaction during slaughtering or trading? The bacteria that cause anthrax can infect both animals and humans. It is primarily an animal disease but humans who are exposed to sick animals are also at risk of catching anthrax.

It is a zoonotic illness, and, by definition, zoonotic illness is primarily found in animals but is capable of infecting humans as well. Anthrax meets the definition. It is a zoonotic illness like COVID-19, which might have started in animals and then spread to humans. Other zoonotic illnesses are Lassa fever, monkeypox, and the like. The abattoirs and meat sector are under the regulation of state ministries of agriculture and rural development or livestock. They have full access to abattoirs as they are meant to regulate abattoirs within states. These authorities including the veterinary public health officers and veterinary services in respective states are being notified by our colleagues in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to be on alert and sensitize the public and meat workers about the likelihood of anthrax.

The Senate suggested that your agency, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as well as the Ministry of Health should urgently embark on a nationwide vaccination of livestock against anthrax. Is it something being considered by the NCDC and others?

We like the idea that the NCDC is being mentioned as being responsible for everything because it reflects the trust of authorities and the public in the agency. However, it is important to highlight that we don’t look after animals. The animal sector is under the jurisdiction of our colleagues in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, specifically, under the veterinary and pest control services. There are vaccines to protect animals present in the country, which I think were produced by the National Veterinary Research Institute. At the moment, the strategy is to conduct ring vaccination around suspected or confirmed cases. Vaccines are always available and people who have animal farms and look after animals are meant to liaise with their local public health vet to arrange a vaccination programme for their animals. It is similar to owning a dog as a pet and having a vet give it the necessary vaccines. Vaccines have always been available. Perhaps we will now see an increased uptake now that there has been confirmation of anthrax in the country. For a mass vaccination campaign in terms of responding to the outbreak, it will depend on where the outbreak goes because it is a major endeavour to try and vaccinate all livestock in and around the country. The more important thing at the moment is to respond to what is going on and encourage animal owners to make use of available public health veterinary services to make arrangements for routine immunization of their livestock.

Chinese Man Convicted In Malawi Over Racist Videos

A Malawian court on Thursday convicted a Chinese national accused of racism and exploiting children in relation to a series of online videos and ordered him to leave the country.

A judge in the African nation’s capital of Lilongwe handed Lu Ke, 27, a 12-month sentence after the man found guilty of procuring children to take part in entertainment and racially exploiting them.

Public prosecutor, Masauko Chamkakala said Lu, who was arrested last year, was given seven days to leave Malawi, having already served his time behind bars.

“He has already served 12 months, hence his immediate release,” Chamkakala told AFP.

Lu allegedly filmed children singing racist chants about themselves in Chinese — which they did not understand — and then sold the videos on Chinese social media.

In one video, a young child aged about nine was heard saying: “I am a monster with a low IQ.”

Chamkakala said Lu has paid compensation to the victims but declined to disclose the amount.

Lu was arrested in June last year in neighbouring Zambia for illegal entry after fleeing there and was later extradited back to Malawi.

When the allegations surfaced, the Chinese embassy in Malawi condemned the accused’s actions in a statement, saying “The Chinese government has zero tolerance for racism.”

Akpabio to present the list of minister nominations this week.

The names of the ministry nominees will probably be announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio this week during plenary.

On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, the National Assembly’s two chambers hold plenary sessions.

Two months after his inauguration, President Bola Tinubu’s failure to form his government has caused considerable unrest.

A new addition to the 1999 Constitution mandates that within 60 days of taking the oath of office, the President and governors must submit the names of those nominated as ministers or commissioners for confirmation by the Senate or the respective state Houses of Assembly.

This implies that before the end of this month, Tinubu and the 28 governors must submit the lists of candidates for ministries and commissioners.

The President has till this week to announce his nominees for ministers.

The letter with the names of the nominees reached the Senate President last week, according to sources at the National Assembly.

But according to the sources, the delay in reading out the names was caused by a few last-minute changes that were made to the list.

One of the sources said, “The Senate President got the ministerial list last week, but it was not yet time for him to unveil it, hence the reason it was kept.

“Most importantly, there were some last-minute adjustments. The Senate President had a meeting with President Tinubu over the list last week.”

Another source stated that the administration had been making every effort to prevent criticism; as a result, the list could not be postponed.

The lawmaker noted that the names would be read out this week, but could not tell when exactly.

The source said, “The names of the ministerial nominees will be out this week.

“The Asiwaju-led administration has been trying its best to avoid a backlash even though it is unavoidable. The names will be unveiled this week; that is all I can say.”

The identities will be revealed this week, according to another source, and many people would be astonished.

The insider stated that the delay was intentional due to strong lobbying, but the list’s specifics would surprise many Nigerians.

The source added, “The list of the nominees will be unveiled this week and I can tell you that the details will shock a lot of Nigerians. I mean a lot of big politicians will be thrown aback.

“This will be the real Asiwaju Tsunami.”

A ranking senator said that there was not much to the screening of ministers and that it could be completed in three days or one week when asked about the nominees’ screening process.

The source stated, “There is no big deal about the screening of ministers. The ministers can be screened in three days or one week.

“Even if we have to call special or emergency sessions after the plenary has closed for this session, we will.

“But I know the list will be read out this week.”

Generator fumes kill family of 6; couple, two children, in-law in Anambra

The deaths of a couple, their two children, and other people at their home in Nkwele Ezunaka, Onitsha, have been verified by the Anambra State Police Command.

According to reports, the guy, his wife, two children, mother-in-law, and an apprentice passed away on Wednesday after breathing in deadly fumes from a generator.

City Round learned that the man’s wife had recently given birth, so as a surprise gift for her, he set up the family’s relocation to their new home.

It was the family’s first night in their new home, according to local sources, who also stated that only the four-day-old baby survived.

According to the source, the incident came to light when a friend who had been invited to join them for the celebration that evening but was unable to do so went to the house and saw that the doors were closed and the generator was still running.

He said, “The entire members of the family were in their new house celebrating when suddenly there was a power outage. The man put on the generator stationed at the verandah close to the bedroom.

“The celebration continued into the night before they all slept off and didn’t remember to switch off the generator. The next morning, a friend who was supposed to join them in the celebration but couldn’t meet up, went to the deceased’s house only to discover that the doors were locked with the generator still running.

“After knocking for some time without response, he alerted other neighbours, who forced the door open and saw the lifeless bodies; it was only the four-day-old baby that survived.

“The wife and one of the daughters were still unconscious when they were rushed to the hospital, but efforts to resuscitate them, including placing them on oxygen, failed, and they were pronounced dead.”

Rev. Fr. Izunna Okonkwo, the manager of St. Charles Borromeo Hospital in Onitsha, where the victims were taken after being transported there, reported that only the newborn child had survived.

According to sources, the middle-aged man, who went by the name Ifeanyi, was a trader at the Onitsha Bridge Head Market and was from Enugu State.

Tochukwu Ikenga, a spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, who also verified the occurrence to our correspondent on Friday, said investigators were still trying to determine what caused the tragedy.

“The matter is still being investigated and the details will be communicated as soon as investigation is concluded,” he added.
