Revealed! Read Details Of True Story Behind Ike Ekweremadu’s Arrest

More details have emerged over what led to the arrest of former deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, in London following allegations of organ harvesting. It has been alleged that Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, who have four kids and a house in Willesden, North London, traveled to London from Nigeria with a 15-year-old David Ukpo who they allegedly found on the streets, with the hope of harvesting his kidney to be used by his ill daughter.

According to reports, Ekweremadu and his wife took Ukpo to Royal Tree Hospital in London for medical examination and when he disclosed his age to the doctor, the doctor canceled the procedure and the boy was taken back into the custody of the couple.

The prosecution alleged that while the boy was in the custody of the couple, he was not treated well, which made him escape from their home, slept on the streets in London for two days, and found his way to a police station. The police commenced an investigation into the case which eventually led to the arrest of Ekweremadu and the 20,000 pounds which were found on the lawmaker was confiscated by the UK authorities. However, a source close to the couple revealed that contrary to reports that he illegally obtained a 15-year-old homeless boy from the streets, Ukpo, told the couple that he is 21 years old and that he perfectly understood that he was traveling for medical purposes.

“Ekweremadu’s daughter has been sick with a failed kidney and urgently needed a transplant and because her health was rapidly deteriorating, when he was told that there was someone who could be compatible, he readily welcomed the idea.
“Ekweremadu didn’t abduct or coerce him. The young man said he was 21 years old and a passport was gotten for him. However, the lawmaker was not aware that the young man had other plans and had already contacted someone in London who it is believed convinced him to report Ekweremadu to the authorities and accuse him of trafficking.

“The young man went to the UK authorities and claimed he was deceived into coming to the UK and that he is 15 years old. But that is not true as the letter Ekweremadu wrote to the British High Commission clearly states that Ukpo was coming to London for medical purposes,” the source said.

The letter, which accompanied the visa application was dated, December 28, 2021, and seen by Daily Sun, showed the letter Ekweremadu wrote was addressed to the British High Commission with the subject: Medical Visa Application for Ukpo Nwamini David.

It read: “I am writing in support of the visa application made by Mr. Ukpo Nwamini David, who is currently having medical investigations for a kidney donation to Ms. Sonia Ekweremadu.

David and Sonia will be at the Royal Free Hospital, London and I will be providing the necessary funding. I have enclosed a statement from my bank account. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require additional information.”

At the Uxbridge Court, while reading out the charges, the prosecutor, Damla Ayas, said: “It is a conspiracy in relation to human trafficking offenses for the purpose of organ harvesting. The victim in this case is 15 years old.
The couple was interviewed at the police station. Both of the defendants have provided a prepared statement.

Ekweremadu in his prepared statement denied allegations of human trafficking. He said at no stage has he arranged transport for anyone with the intention to exploit them.”
Gavin Irwin, who represents Ekweremadu, told the UK authorities that his client is innocent and not guilty of any wrongdoing.

He said: “There is no question that this is a serious allegation. Ekweremadu is a member of the Senate in Nigeria. He has previously held a senior role as deputy president of the Senate. He is a member of the bar in Nigeria and is a principal in a law firm that bears his name.
“Those issues taken together go way beyond him being a person of good character, rather he has led a blameless life as a public servant.”

The lawyer for Mrs. Ekweremadu, Antonia Gray said: “She has never been complicit or involved in any alleged illegal trafficking of any young person. She is an accountant with an unblemished record.”

Sierra Leone’s President Bio In Search of Qatari Investors To Help Turn The Country’s Economy Around

If Sierra Leone’s economy is to grow by the 4% predicted by the World Bank in their latest country report, there must be a massive shift towards the expansion of production and export in key sectors of the economy. This can only come from foreign investors, who currently are guarding their wallets in response to the global economic downturn.

Last Monday, President Julius Maada Bio met various Qatari agencies, private companies, and potential investors in Doha, to woo foreign direct investors to Sierra Leone.
He said that “the resource-rich, peaceful and investor-friendly West African nation is offering great investment opportunities in different sectors of the economy,” adding that his government has created an appropriate environment for businesses to thrive through tax incentives and trade reforms that support the private sector growth.

President Bio also said that Sierra Leone is strategically located in terms of accessibility to markets in both Europe and Latin America because of the short distance by air transport.
“I am here to assure you that we have an open-door policy to ensure that foreign businesses thrive and repatriate profits to their home countries,” he said.

President Julius Maada Bio also said that part of his state visit is aimed at creating and improving trade and investment relations between Sierra Leone and Qatar, adding that he is encouraging representatives of private companies and investors to visit Sierra Leone to enable them to explore the many investment opportunities in the country.

First Vice Chairman of the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mohamed bin Ahmed Twar Al Kuwari, expressed hope that the president’s visit would create an opportunity to explore public-private partnerships in Sierra Leone.
Representatives of other private companies and Qatari agencies praised President Julius Maada Bio for the progress he has made in his country and assured him that various business delegations would visit Sierra Leone to explore investment opportunities.

President Bio also held meetings with representatives of the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Qatar Diar, Qatar Investment Authority, Qatar Development Funds, Qatari Businessmen Association and several private companies, including the MBK Group and Hassad Food, an investment arm of the Qatar Investment Authority with a primary focus on agriculture.

Critics of president Bio say that this is not the first time he is visiting Qatar in search of foreign investments and that so far he has failed. They accuse the president and his wife of using State funds to have holidays abroad while pretending to be searching for investors that are yet to grace the shores of Sierra Leone.

Roe v Wade: US Supreme Court ends constitutional right to abortion

Millions of women in the US will lose the constitutional right to abortion after the Supreme Court overturned its 50-year-old Roe v Wade decision

The judgement paves the way for individual states to ban the procedure.

Half are expected to introduce new restrictions or bans. Thirteen have already passed so-called trigger laws to automatically outlaw abortion.

President Joe Biden described it as “a tragic error” and urged states to enact laws to allow the procedure.

After the Supreme Court ruling, abortion access is expected to be cut off for about 36 million women of reproductive age, according to research from Planned Parenthood, a healthcare organisation that provides abortions.

Demonstrators from both sides had gathered outside the court, with police keeping them apart.

One anti-abortion activist told the BBC she was “elated” as her side cheered the decision. “It’s not enough just to make this the law of the land. To be pro-life is to make [abortion] unthinkable,” she said.

Across the divide, pro-choice supporters decried the decision as “illegitimate” and even a form of “fascism”.

The BBC’s Samantha Granville, reporting from an abortion clinic in Little Rock, Arkansas, said that as the ruling was posted, doors to the patient area were shut and the sound of distant sobbing could be heard before she was asked to leave. The state is one of those subject to a trigger law.

The landmark 1973 Roe v Wade case saw the Supreme Court rule by a vote of seven to two that a woman’s right to terminate her pregnancy was protected by the US constitution.

The ruling gave American women an absolute right to an abortion in the first three months (trimester) of pregnancy but allowed for restrictions in the second trimester and for prohibitions in the third.

But in the decades since, anti-abortion rulings have gradually pared back access in more than a dozen states.

In its current session, the Supreme Court had been considering a case, Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, that challenged Mississippi’s ban on abortion after 15 weeks.

By ruling in favour of the state, the conservative-majority court effectively ended the constitutional right to an abortion.

Five justices were firmly in favour: Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote a separate opinion saying that whilst he supported the Mississippi ban, he would not have gone further.

The three justices who disagreed with the majority – Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan – wrote that they had done so “with sorrow – for this court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection”.

Sierra Leonean Chef Wins Basque Culinary World Prize

A Sierra Leone-born chef is this year’s winner of the Basque Culinary World Prize (BCWP), and the first African to bag the $105,000 prize.

Fatmata Binta, based in Ghana, beat 1,000 nominees to emerge as the world’s top chef for showcasing the sustainable nomadic culinary culture and exploring the diaspora of West African cuisine through her innovative ‘Dine on a Mat’ pop-up initiative.

“It feels great and humbling,” Binta told Quartz. “It is also a reminder to women that they can achieve anything, [no] matter their background and ethnicity. This prize is going to change lives.”
Binta has popularized the culture and cuisines of the Fulani people, who are nomadic pastoralists in west Africa.

The Fulani make up the biggest nomadic tribe in the world, with more than 20 million people moving tirelessly across the Sahara Desert. ‘Dine on a Mat’ involves sitting on a mat, eating with your hands, and connecting with new people by telling stories that preserve your traditions.

Despite African cuisines being ignored for a long by the fine-dining mainstream, Binta’s award is now proof that cuisines from the continent can make it to the world stage.

Binta’s food aims to break down societal barriers
She was selected because of the impact of her initiative on her community and beyond. Conceptualizing the kitchen as a safe space, the BCWP press release said, Binta not only makes her dishes for “guests of the world,” she also prepares them for the communities from which these cuisines originate, presenting them as food that brings peace.

“With this, she sends the message to the world that sustainability must be the norm and not something exceptional, based on common sense, reinforcing female empowerment, and the matriarchal base of these communities,” Joan Roca, president of the BCWP jury, said in a statement.

Inspired by the challenges that women in rural Africa face, Binta said her innovation in food aims to preserve African culture through storytelling. She intends to use the prize money to build a community centre that will cater to the needs of Fulani women and collaborate with farmers across Ghana to feed more families.

“My favourite African cuisine is called ‘Lachiri eh corsan,’ which is simply steamed couscous made out of sun-dried corn and plain yoghurt fermented the Fulani way,” Binta said. “It is not an everyday dish, it’s meant for celebration.”

To her, culinary culture should involve connecting with new people, improving food security, reinforcing cultural identity, breaking down societal barriers, and influencing positive change.
She has also founded the Fulani Kitchen Foundation, where interactive dinner experiences raise funds for community projects. Its aim is to meet social, educational, and economic needs. More than 300 families from 12 communities, spread across four regions of Ghana, currently benefit from the initiative.

Analysis of the results shows a close correlation to customer numbers using the airports during 2021, a time when varying travel conditions remained in place across many global regions, and with air travel quickly returning across most of the world, more normal times are coming back.

Edward Plaisted of Skytrax said: “We are delighted to announce that Hamad International Airport has been voted the World’s Best Airport for 2022, repeating their success of 2021. Our congratulations go to the Management, staff, and stakeholders at Hamad International Airport who have all contributed to this achievement for the second year running. Police, Amotekun, Monarch Divided Over Owo Church Attackers’ Arrest

The Ondo Police Command and the state’s security outfit, Amotekun Corps, as well as the traditional rulers have disagreed over the alleged arrest of suspected killers of worshippers at the St Francis Catholic Church in Owo.

While Amotekun claimed that some of the perpetrators have been arrested, the Police and traditional rulers said that they were not aware of any arrests made in the stat
The divergent stance held by all parties came on Thursday after Amotekun Commander, Adetunji Adeleye, told newsmen in Akure, the state capital, that they have arrested some of the attackers, in barely three weeks after 40 people were killed.

Adeleye, however, did not give the actual figure of the suspects arrested, but the corps leader was optimistic that everyone who was involved in the Owo Attack would be brought to book.
The Amotekun commander added that some weapons and the vehicle used by the Owo church attackers have been recovered.

When contacted for confirmation, the Ondo State Police Command through its spokesperson, SP Funmilayo Odunlami, said the force was not aware of such an arrest.
Nevertheless, it is expected that the Amotekun Corps would hand the suspects over to the police for further investigations and onward prosecution.

Also sharing the views of the police, the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye, said that he was yet to be briefed of any arrest and that he would only accept the claim until Amotekun paraded the suspects.
Also, the Director of Communication for the Catholic church, Augustine lkwu, said that the church can’t react now until it has full information on the arrest of suspected killers of members of the church.

Also, the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN, Ondo state branch, speaking through its Public Relations Officer, Daisi Ajayi, pleaded for time to get the full details of the arrest.
The alleged arrest came barely 24 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari assured Nigerians that the attackers who he described as “cowards” behind recent assaults on churches in the country will be punished.

“As for the cowards, they will be punished for their crimes. We will bring them to justice. Rest assured that the full might of Nigeria’s formidable security and intelligence forces are involved in that endeavor,” Buhari was quoted as saying in a statement by his media aide Garba Shehu.

“For now, I urge all Nigerians to come together in prayer-whether Christian, Muslim, or any of our great faiths- let us hold the victims and their families in our hearts and minds.

“Let us show the cowards who seek to divide us along religious lines that we will not be divided. Let us show them that Nigerians will continue to cherish what we share while respecting each other’s differences. Let us show them that Nigerians will never be bullied by cowards, extremists, or terrorists.”
According to President Buhari, the country’s religious freedom and diversity are what make Nigeria great.

Over 45,000 Out-of-School Children In Sierra Leone To Benefit From Qatari Support

Sierra Leone’s free quality education program could get a boost with support from the Qatari Education Above All (EAA) Foundation.

Speaking to Sierra Leone’s president Julius Maada Bio in Doha, Chief Executive Officer for the Foundation, Fahad Al-Sulaiti, said that at least 45,000 out-of-school children in Sierra Leone will benefit from the EAA.
He stated that the aim of the zero out-of-school program –  their flagship program, is to enroll children back in school and remove barriers that keep them out of school.

A board member of the Qatar Foundation, Dr. Mazen Jassim Jaidah, spoke about the work of the Foundation in promoting education, research, and innovation. “We are here to support you, your Excellency, with the great work you do in Sierra Leone,” he assured.

President Bio said that the out-of-school children program is very much aligned with his vision to increase access to education for children through the free quality education program.
“While we offer free quality education, we also need to cater to the Out-Of-School Children,” the President said.

He spoke about the various components of the Free Quality Education Programme, including school feeding, provision of school bus services, payment of transitional examination fees, provision of core textbooks, and teaching and learning materials.

The President also spoke about the National Policy on Radical Inclusion in Schools, the first attempt by any Government in Sierra Leone to provide a roadmap for the day-to-day operations of schools and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education to ensure inclusion and positive experience for all students regardless of their status in society.

The president’s wife – Madam Fatima Bio spoke about her personal project – the “Hands Off Our Girls” and “Sanitary Pad Distribution” which is aimed at protecting girls and preventing them from dropping out of school.

The EAA works to ensure equal access to education and to harness the power of quality education for positive, sustainable, and inclusive change. EAA is the brainchild of the founder, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the wife of the former Head of State of Qatar, and a long-time advocate for education.
