Legendary Madrid, Spain Goalkeeper, Iker Casillas, Retires From Football

Iker Casillas, legendary Spain and Real Madrid goalie, has called time on the game of football that brought him fame and fortune.
Casillas, before announcing his retirement, played over 1,000 games as a professional Footballer.

The 39-year-old, who holds the record for most Champions League clean sheets and most clean sheets for Spain, spent the last five years of his career playing for Porto after his 25-year spell with Real ended in 2015.

Casillas, Skysport reports, won the World Cup, two European Championships, five La Liga titles, and three Champions League trophies during an illustrious career.

He also lifted the Supercopa de Espana four times, the UEFA Super Cup twice, and the FIFA Club World Cup during his time in the Spanish capital.

After moving to Portugal at the age of 34, Casillas continued to win more silverware, winning the top-flight Primeira Liga in 2018 – although he did not feature last season as Porto won the league-and-cup double.

Casillas has been awarded the La Liga Best Goalkeeper gong twice, been voted into the FIFA FIFPro World XI five times, won the World Cup Golden Glove in 2010, and was named Primeira Liga Best Goalkeeper for 2019.

He is the second most-capped Spain player of all time, playing in four World Cups, and holds the record for most appearances, most clean sheets, and most penalty saves in Champions League history.

Co-Inventor Of Computer Mouse, William English, Dies At 91

One of the pioneers of the modern computer interface has passed away: the New York Times reports that William “Bill” English died on July 26th from respiratory failure at the age of 91. Alongside Douglas Englebart at the Stanford Research Institute, English helped develop the first computer mouse and put together a 1968 “ Mother of All Demons” that outlined many concepts that would come to PCs over the decades, such as graphical user interfaces, online text editing, video calls, and hypertext links.

While Englebart was considered the visionary, English was one of the only people who truly grasped the ideas and had the talent to bring them to fruition. He built the mouse after Englebart drew a sketch of it, for example. While Englebart was demonstrating the concepts at that 1968 event, English was orchestrating things behind the scenes.

It’s not hard to see English’s legacy. While touchscreens are increasingly common, many of the other features he and Englebart foresaw would be refined at places like Xerox PARC and find their way into the mainstream, where they still dominate today. In that sense, English could make his presence felt for decades to come.
