Police conduct a civil trial of the officer who shot man following an argument in Jos.

A police officer named Solomon Damak who is accused of shooting a young man during a political debate will go on trial in an orderly chamber on Monday (today).

At a police station in Jos, the state capital, Damak is being held.

According to the report, the victim, Nyommena Badapba, a resident of the Tudun Wada neighborhood, was shot in the shoulder on Sunday while arguing with a police officer.

The debate focused on who will prevail in the state’s upcoming governorship race.

During the argument, the policeman is reported to have criticized Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, the All Progressives Congress’ candidate for governor, saying he would lose because he had nothing to offer.

However, the victim was said to have attempted to defend the candidate, which prompted the policeman to shoot him.

According to reports, the man who suffered gunshot wounds to his shoulder is receiving care in a hospital in the state.

In a statement on Monday, Alabo Alfred, the public relations officer for the Plateau Police, confirmed the officer’s imprisonment.

The statement partly read, “The Plateau State Police Command condemns in strong terms the shooting of an unsuspecting civilian, Mr Nyommena Salah Badapba ‘m’ of Tudun Wada, Jos by an obdurate personnel of the Command, Inspr Solomon Damak.

“The circumstance that led to the infliction of the gun injury by the recalcitrant officer does not fit into his professional calling but was done out of vindictiveness which contradicts the attributes of a Nigerian Police officer.

The officer had been taken into custody to make sure he didn’t flee from justice. After his gun was found, he was taken into custody to face punishment.
