Human rights activist Adegboruwa challenges DSS over Godwin Emefiele
Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, a rights activist, has petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS) to file charges against Godwin Emefiele.
The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is accused of financing terrorists, diverting funds for other purposes, lending money for agriculture, and engaging in dishonest forex trading operations.
Adegboruwa stated in a statement on Monday that a public official cannot be above investigation or the law if there is in fact a case for him to answer.
The attorney described how the DSS attempted to have Emefiele arrested and investigated by obtaining a court order but was “greatly embarrassed.”
“It is better to make everything plain and open to the Nigerian people”, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) advised.
Adegboruwa acknowledged that the “many crises” involving the CBN Governor do not bode good for the state of the economy.
However, he emphasized that no one should be subjected to disproportionate persecution or detention without a valid reason.
Adegboruwa contends that if there is a legitimate allegation, DSS does not need to arrest a citizen before filing a court complaint.
The SAN claimed that the allegations of alleged support of terrorism and stamp duty “are documentary,” and that the charges will “compel the defendant’s (court) attendance.”
He added “There is therefore no need for the seemingly unending drama between Mr Emefiele, the DSS and the Presidency, unless of course it is part of the hidden agenda.”
