Cop In Nigeria’s House Of Reps Speaker Convoy Shoots Dead Newspaper Vendor
In what is yet another police brutality which necessitated the #EndSARS protest across Nigeria, a policeman attached to the convoy of Femi Gbajabiamila, the country’s House of Representatives Speaker, on Wednesday, shot and killed a newspaper vendor, Elechi Emmanuel, in Abuja. The sad incident happened at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja.
The victim was seen gasping for breath and unconscious in a video shared online by a passer-by, while one of his colleagues tried desperately to revive him immediately after the shooting.
It was gathered that newspaper vendors upon sighting the Speaker’s convoy gathered to hail him but the overzealous security detail opened fire on them, killing Emmanuel in the process.
Meanwhile, a source confirmed to online news medium, SaharaReporters, that the victim was rushed to the National Hospital where he was confirmed dead.
The media aide to the Speaker, Lanre Lasisi, did not respond to calls and text messages sent to him on the incident.
The incident comes weeks after Nigerian youth took to the streets across the country to demand an end to police brutality and extrajudicial killings especially by operatives of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad unit of the Nigeria Police Force.
Meanwhile, the speaker, Gbajabiamila, has reacted to the development, condemning the act and said the said police officer had been suspended from his convoy, while an investigation into the matter would commence.
