After All, It Made Sense Only To Those Who Know

Kennedy Okezie

“E go better, E go better”…. this is a statement of belief entrusted on our shoulders as littluns by our forefathers in the hope, for a better Nigeria.

In fact, it formed part of our parental upbringing and advisory words of encouragement that the future lies on our shoulders as children. We hoped, we groped, we worked hard and yet, we found ourselves repeating same lines to our own children, like we were tutored growing up.

Truth be said, our forefathers were not wrong in their allusions and expectations about a brighter and beautiful future for Nigeria, taking purview of the avalanche of natural resources this sleeping Giant of Africa is bequated with. Unfortunately, we are bedeviled with a ubiquitous betrayal by those we entrusted with our leadership.

As always, before they assumed power, they present us with a magnified manifesto that encapsulates our challenges backed with ready made solutions that keep defying every odds facing us till date.

Yet, to this end, our dear President’s recent speech also failed to capture the gains of our nation under “This New CHANGE” assumed to be a rescue platform or panecea for the most publicized administrative malady of the PDP years in leadership in our nation.

As I write this piece, my thoughts runs back to the day Nigerians started experiencing CHANGE negatively and i imagine how far we have grown as a nation. We all have eyes to see and I am sure that our body language would help to define how far we have fared too.

Suffice it to note here, that these photos of despair displayed by this young woman in various social media; truly captures the true state of our nation, and speaks for the common man who is unable to express his agony so far; But the loyalists of CHANGE are quick to condemn her actions as well as back their opinion with biblical verses to justify their assertion. OMG! Naija!

Hmmmmm, i take solace in the words of William Faulkner who said “Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world…would do this, it would change the earth.” Posterity would remember this young woman for good, for speaking passionately through pictures as we celebrate our 60th Independence Anniversary.

Personally, i like to note that we may not be where we dream to be as a nation, but with the staying power of the Nigerian spirit that keeps us going as one entity; we hope, that one day, we would tell a better story.
