The confederation of African Football (CAF) has set March for its presidential election.
Recall that the election was earlier set to hold on February 2021 but it will now take place in March of the same year.
This decision is among several others that arrived at the end of an Executive Committee meeting on Thursday, September 10, 2020.
The 43rd CAF Ordinary General Assembly has been rescheduled for December 2020 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Several high profile personalities are looking forward to running for the presidential race presently occupied by Ahmad Ahmad.
The former Madagascar Football Federation President has however not declared his intentions to seek a second mandate. He previously took to social media to say he is yet to make a decision and emphasized that he is focused on the fight against the Coronavirus.
This Pan-African Sports News Agency had earlier reported that CAF Executive Committee members had approved the candidacy of Ahmad and have thrown their support behind the current leader of the regulatory football body.
Meanwhile, 53-year-old former vice president of Burundi Football Federation, President Lydia Nsekera Kick442.com learned, is bracing up to challenge Ahmad for the hot seat. In 2012, she became the first woman to become a member of FIFA’s executive committee.
According to Saudi24news, Hani Abu Raida, former President of the Egyptian Football Federation and members of the Executive Bureau of the International and African Football Confederation alluded his candidacy to run in next year’s elections.
Ahmad Ahmad replaced Issa Hayatou in March 2017. He won 34 votes to 20 to end the Cameroonian’s 29 years reign in charge of the body.
The itinerary of the electoral process for the positions of president and members of the executive committee of CAF is as follows:
• September 11, 2020: Opening of the reception of applications
• November 12, 2020: Closing of the receipt of applications
• January 11, 2021: Communication of the names of the candidates to all national associations
• March 12, 2021: Elective General Meeting
President Ahmad’s first mandate ends in February 2021.
