Nigerian Immigration Personnel Arrest Two Indians For Illegal Entry
The personnel of the Nigerian Immigration Service operating at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in the country”s main commercial city of Lagos have nabbed two Indian citizens for entering the country illegally. The two foreigner allegedly entered Nigeria without proper papers.
This was disclosed by Sunday James, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Immigration, who further revealed that the two persons entered Nigeria through Cotonou, Benin Republic in February 2020 without submitting themselves to the immigration authorities for approval.
According to the statement, the two Indians whose names were not provided were caught at the airport when they attempted to join other Indian nationals for evacuation out of the country on Saturday.
The statement revealed that Mr. Abdullahi Usman, Lagos Airport Comptroller of Immigration, in his submission to the headquarters, stated that when its officers at the airport were profiling the men, they discovered that they entered Nigeria through the land border and had visa on arrival application approval, which they failed to present to Immigration at the border.
Usman further disclosed that the men had been In Cotonou, the Benin Republic for a month as they had the stamp of that country dated February 9, 2020, when they left and entered Nigeria illegally as they did not present themselves for Immigration checks at the border.
The statement said the Indians would be prosecuted according to Nigerian laws in order to serve as a deterrent to others.
Meanwhile, 446 Indian nationals were evacuated from Nigeria on Saturday, as part of the ongoing evacuation of foreign nationals as a result of the COVID -19 pandemic.
Mr. Muhammad Babandele, the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service, warned migrants to desist from breaking the immigration laws of countries of transit or destination to avoid sanctions that may result in stopping them from coming to Nigeria or payment of fees chargeable depending on the gravity of the offense committed.
