Pursue innovation and build brands to grow Sierra Leone’s economy, expert advises at Salone CEOs Meet

  • Sierra Leone’s business, government, and economy leaders should walk confidently into 2022 and pursue innovation to drive economic growth; a Nigerian communication expert ChidoNwakanma counseled on Thursday at the Salone CEO’s Meet powered by La Fete Communications. Nwakanma urged the leaders in the private and public sectors to build on the strengths of Sierra Leone and tap the opportunities in historical presentation, education, tourism, the extractive industry, and the environment. Participants at the forum, leaders across sectors, agreed on the imperatives of innovation and entrepreneurship and exploring the country’s opportunities more closely.
  • Noting that Sierra Leone’s relatively compact population and environmental serenity, Nwakanma submitted that the country has yet to leverage the history of Fourah Bay College as the first university-level institution in Africa. He noted, “Africa longs for higher education. They go to institutions with history and tradition. What is holding back Fourah Bay College, Africa’s higher education institution in modern times?”Nwakanma is the president of the Nigerian chapter of theInternational Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and a former president of the Public Relations ConsultantsAssociation of Nigeria. He is also on the Adjunct Faculty of the school of Media & Communication, Pan Atlantic University Lagos, Nigeria. Nwakanma asserted that Sierra Leone should market its rich environmental and tourist potentials as neighboring Ghana and the Gambia.
  • On tourism and the environment, Nwakanma shared his experience from 1 December 2021. “I took shots from my room at the Sierra Bay Hotel & Residence and sent them to friends back in Nigeria and across the world. The immediate response?”Wonderful. I love this. How much would it cost a family? Another person responded with the observation, “Is the water that blue? There is still hope for our environment.’The speaker submitted, “Sierra Leone should leverage history and nature for tourism. Ghana and the Gambia are doing so already.” Significantly, Mr. Nwakanma harped on the imperative of innovation and entrepreneurship as needed ingredients for success in 2022. He noted that most experts agree that the Sierra Leone economy would witness “strong real GDP growth of4.8% in 2022, well above the Sub-Saharan Africa average of3.7%”.He said it was up to leaders and entrepreneurs to make this happen and even exceed the expectations. “The critical question for entrepreneurs today in Sierra Leone and the rest of WestAfrica is one of vision. What can you see? Put another way, what can you envision even if it is not visible now?” Nwakanma asserted that innovation, the entrepreneurial art of seeking and developing new vistas, is the challenge before SierraLeone and its leaders and the rest of Africa. He a@irmed, “Economists and global strategists say Sierra Leone should have a smoother ride in 2022 than in the last two years. The economic fundamentals should be good. That means the internal market will also get better and open. There are also opportunities in the larger West African and African market.”La Fete Communications organized the Salone CEOs Meet 2021following the first one in 2019. COVID19 aborted the event in 2020.
  • The conveners of the event Ms. Maraya Mushka Conteh and Mr. Kennedy Chinedum Okezie said the Salone CEO’s Meet is a platform for exploring ideas and strategies for the country’s development.

The current President of The Gambia, President Adama Barrow has won his re-election bid in the just-concluded presidential election of Saturday, 4th December 2021. With this win, President Barrow of the National People’s Party has cemented his stay in the State House of ‘The Smiling Coast of Africa’ for a second term.

US Officials To Boycott Beijing Olympics – CNN

The Biden administration is expected to announce this week that U.S. government officials will not attend the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, CNN reported on Sunday.

U.S. President Joe Biden said last month that he was considering such a diplomatic boycott to protest China’s human rights record, including what Washington says is genocide against minority Muslims. The administration has been under pressure from activists and members of Congress to skip the games, reports Reuters.

The White House declined to comment on CNN’s report on Sunday. Four sources with knowledge of the administration’s thinking previously told Reuters that there was a growing consensus within the White House to keep U.S. officials away from the Beijing Olympics.

CNN said the U.S. boycott would not prevent its athletes from competing in the games. The State Department did not respond to questions about the report late Sunday.

Dowen Students Who ‘Allegedly’ Beat 12-Year-Old Pupil Till Death Revealed

Identities of students of Dowen Secondary School, who tortured 12-year-old pupil of Dowen College, Lagos, known as Sylvester (Jnr), till he died because he refused to join cult with them has surfaced.

Following the death, his father, Sylvester Oromoni had explained how the students who bullied his child, were once suspended temporarily by the school after they asked the boy to describe his sister’s private parts. The distraught father, said after the incident of bullying was reported to the school, the deceased boy was taken from one hostel to another but that the bullying persisted and that though he had initially planned to remove his child from the school, he reconsidered because his elder sisters were schooling there at the time.

The father said Saturday, December 4 eas his son’s birthday but that he would celebrate it regardless of his demise.
Oromoni said the family took the boy to the hospital where blood tests and an X-ray were conducted. He said Junior also underwent typhoid/malaria treatments but his lips started peeling.
The father said Junior suffered liver enlargement due to congealed blood. It was also claimed that Junior was fed a liquid substance described as “a chemical” for refusing to join the group.

In an outpour, Junior’s father told The Cable: “My son suffered. His birthday is next tomorrow (Dec 4). I’ll celebrate it. I’ll have a cake baked. I’ll cut it on his behalf.
“The boys they mentioned were also reported to the school the last term when they bullied Junior and collected all his foodstuffs; clothes.

“I have two daughters, one of whom earlier graduated. I had to remove the second after this incident. They asked this boy to describe the sister’s privates (private parts) and this got to us.
“They put fear in him so much so that, when you ask him, he might keep to himself and say, ‘they will kill me. This way, we didn’t know what to do. I considered removing him but reconsidered it since his sisters were still in the school.

“The new incident came to my knowledge on November 21 after the school called my wife to notify us that our son was in the school clinic, injured. My senior son, who was to make a London trip, came to see us in Warri.
“The next day, we sent a family friend to help pick up our son since he was the only person in Lagos and take him to the hospital. When he got there, he panicked, pointing out that he doubts it’s a football injury as the school claimed.

“He said the boy couldn’t stand because his waist was bent and swollen along with one side of his belly. His mouth was black. I asked, ‘Is this really a football injury?’ He was taken to my house in Lagos but couldn’t sleep at night.
“I asked my eldest to fly to Lagos on November 24, while I took a trip to Asaba, from where I’d also make for Lagos. On getting there, he screamed. ‘This is beyond football injury. Come to Lagos now,’ he told me over the phone.”

The bereaved father said Sylvester Junior only managed to sleep one hour when sedated and would wake up screaming in pain.
He said it was on Monday, when he was away for a government function, that Junior “opened up”.
Oromoni said Junior, before his death, revealed he neither played ball nor tripped as claimed.

He also alleged that the deceased stated that five boys had barged into his room, put off the lights, and beaten him up in the presence of other pupils.
“Junior said, ‘Mummy, I didn’t play ball; I didn’t fall.’ He jumped off his hostel bed. They kicked him, marched on his waist.

“Other students ran off. They threatened to kill them all if they spoke a word to the school staff. They warned Junior to say he sustained injuries while playing ball. They threatened him. If you ask the roommate, they’d all lie. They marched on his ribs and waist. All that pain for a 12-year-old.”
He said, before he could make a return trip to Warri towards facilitating Junior’s transfer to the teaching hospital, the boy drew his last breath.
Meanwhile, the principal of the school resisted the release of the deceased boy’s picture to the press.

Oromoni said she had premised her argument on the deceased being a minor.

He also said he looked forward to an autopsy, arguing that Dowen should be more concerned about going after the boys Junior had named as his assailants before death.

The boy’s father said: “They even released a press statement. Was the principal there when the boy played the said football game? Can they identify who he played with? Where was the housemaster when he was playing it? The woman too is confused. Clearly, she’s trying to protect the school’s image. But a mother of children wants to hide the truth?”
The family, on Thursday, petitioned Hakeem Odumosu, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.

Another petition addressed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) will follow on Monday for a full-scale probe.
He said, “I won’t reveal the steps we’ve taken to seek justice. The parents of the boys are wealthy. They withdrew them. The school called the parents to pick their wards; interviewed them. Some of the parents are planning to fly the children out of the country.

“How can Dowen allow those boys to leave the school without informing the police? The boys are five in number: four are in SS2 while one is in SS1. When the result comes, Nigerians will know the truth.”

Israel To Grant New Visa Policy To Intending Nigerian Pilgrims

Rev. Yakubu Pam, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), has said that the Israeli authorities have agreed to look into the possibility of procuring a three-month group visa for Nigerian Pilgrims that would cover the pilgrimage period as against the two-week visa policy.

Rev. Pam also stressed that Nigerians visiting Israel for pilgrimage should be treated with respect and dignity like pilgrims from other countries.
The Executive Secretary met with the State Pilgrimage Leaders and Managers, comprising the State Chairmen and Secretaries of State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Boards and FCT, to chart a new course for the 2021 general pilgrimage to Israel, Jordan, and Rome on Friday in Abuja.

The Executive Secretary recently visited the State of Israel, met with the Israeli Minister of Tourism as well as with the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria.
The NCPC Chief Executive also informed the Pilgrimage leaders that the Israeli authorities are favorably disposed to commence direct flight from Nigeria to Tel-Aviv during the pilgrimage, promising that the activation of the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and the State of Israel was discussed.

He hinted that Israel as a nation is taking the fight against the spread of COVID 19 seriously, hence it had shut its doors on 29th November 2021, to prevent entry into Israel by foreigners. The ban, according to him, “Is to prevent the spread of COVID 19 Omicron virus discovered in South Africa recently.”

The NCPC boss further informed that the Commission would embark on the State of Readiness visit to Israel and Jordan from 10th -17th January 2022 to ascertain the level of preparedness by the host country and also to inspect facilities at the Holy Sites and Hotels.

The Executive Secretary expressed his desire to commence a full sensitization visit to State Governors in order to canvass support and sponsorship of intending Pilgrims for the 2021 pilgrimage exercise.
It was unanimously agreed by the NCPC and the State Pilgrimage Leaders that the 2021 General Pilgrimage to Israel, Jordan, and Rome would commence in February 2022.

Most of the pilgrimage Leaders who spoke during the meeting commended the Executive Secretary for the positive outcome of his meeting with the Israeli authorities and promised to go back and commence strong advocacy and sensitization on the need for intending pilgrims to be fully vaccinated with the COVID 19 Vaccine.
He informed the State Pilgrimage Stakeholders that the meeting was very fruitful as it centered on the forthcoming 2021 pilgrimage exercise to Israel and the issue of COVID 19 protocols.

The NCPC boss said the Israeli Minister of Tourism was very eager to receive the Nigerian Pilgrims as soon as possible but with a caveat that the intending pilgrims from Nigeria would have to receive the first and second doses of the COVID 19 vaccine.

He added that Nigerian Pilgrims would also be subjected to 5-6 hour isolation until the result of the PCR test is released.
The meeting was held with strict compliance to the COVID 19 protocols and members who could not attend participated and contributed virtually.
