Libya Protests Erupt Over Talk With Isreal

Protests broke out in Libya after Israel said its foreign minister met with Libyan counterpart, even though the two countries do not have formal diplomatic relations.

Libyan media broke the news on yesterday.

Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibeh suspended Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush following her meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, according to the news portal al-Wasat Gate.

Meanwhile, the Libyan Foreign Ministry disputed the claim that Mangoush had held formal talks with Cohen, stating that the meeting in Rome was informal, unofficial, and unplanned.

The ministry said in an online statement that it completely and rejected any normalization of relations with Israel.

Under a 1957 Libyan law, any form of engagement with Israel, with penalties of up to nine years in prison.

The Libyan news site Al-Wasat reported on Monday that the foreign minister had flown to Turkey on a government plane, citing security circles.

It also added that the minister was able to leave the airport with the assistance of the Internal Security Agency.

The parliament in eastern Libya called an emergency session on Monday to discuss what it termed as the “legal and ethical crime against the Libyan people,’’ referring to the reported encounter.

Protesters reportedly torched the residence of Dbeibeh on Sunday night and demanded his resignation.

It was unclear if Dbeibeh was present at the residence when it was set on fire.

Libya has been unstable since the overthrow of dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Numerous militias are still vying for power and influence in the oil-rich country.

The conflict is further fuelled by foreign states.
Currently, two rival governments are vying for power in Libya.

So far, all attempts to resolve the conflicts have been unsuccessful.

White Man, 20 Shoot Dead Three Black People At Florida Store, Kills Self

Tragedy occurred on Saturday, 26 August, 2023 in a predominately African-American neighborhood as a masked white man fatally shot three Black people inside a Jacksonville, Florida, Dollar General Store.

Officials, who confirmed the development, said the attacker posted racist writings, used a gun painted with a swastika, just as they also confirmed that he later killed self.

Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters told a news conference that the attack that left two men and one woman dead was definitely “racially motivated.”

“He hated Black people,” Waters said after reviewing the man’s writings, which were sent to federal law enforcement officials and at least one media outlet shortly before the attack. He added that the gunman acted alone and “there is absolutely no evidence the shooter is part of any larger group.”

Waters said the shooter, who was in his 20s, used a Glock handgun and an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle with at least one of them painted with a swastika.

He was wearing a bullet-resistant vest. He said the shooter had once been involved in a 2016 domestic violence incident and was once involuntarily committed to a mental hospital for examination. He did not provide further details on those incidents.

Officials didn’t immediately release the names of the victims or the shooter.

The sheriff said the gunman had left behind in his writings evidence that leads investigators to believe that he committed the shooting because it was the fifth anniversary of when another gunman opened fire during a video game tournament in Jacksonville, killing two people before fatally shooting himself.

The shooting happened just before 2 p.m. at a Dollar General about three-quarters of a mile from Edward Waters University, a small historically Black university.

In a statement, the university said that shortly before the shooting, one of its security officers saw the man near the school’s library and asked him to identify himself. When he refused, he was asked to leave.

The man returned to his car.

Sheriff Waters said the man was spotted putting on his vest and mask before leaving. He said it is unknown if he had originally planned to attack the school.

“I can’t tell you what his mindset was while he was there, but he did go there,” the sheriff said.
Edward Waters students were locked down in their dorms for several hours after the shooting. No students or faculty are believed involved, the school said.

The shooter had driven to Jacksonville from neighboring Clay County, where he lived with his parents, the sheriff said. That house was being searched late Saturday.

Shortly before the attack, the shooter sent his father a text message telling him to check his computer.

The father found the writings and the family notified 911, but the shooting had already begun, Sheriff Waters said.

“This is a dark day in Jacksonville’s history. There is no place for hate in this community,” the sheriff said. “I am sickened by this cowardly shooter’s personal ideology.” He said the investigation will continue. The FBI was helping the sheriff’s office and said it had opened a hate crime investigation.
Mayor Donna Deegan said she is “heartbroken.”

“This is a community that has suffered again and again. So many times this is where we end up,” Deegan said. “This is something that should not and must not continue to happen in our community.”

Gov. Ron DeSantis, after speaking by phone with the sheriff, called the shooter a “scumbag” and denounced his racist motivation.

“This guykilled himself rather than face the music and accept responsibility for his actions. He took the coward’s way out,” said DeSantis, who was in Iowa campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination.

Both President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland were briefed on the shooting, officials said.

Dollar General’s corporate office said in a statement that the company was supporting its Jacksonville employees “as we work closely with law enforcement.”

Virginia Bradford lives in the neighborhood of modest brick and cinder block houses near the store. She frequently shops at the Dollar General, and said she meant to go there Saturday for detergent and bleach, but got sidetracked by other plans.

“That’s my store,” Bradford told reporters, looking past patrol cars with flashing lights blocking the street to the store a block away. “I know everyone in the store. It’s sad.”

Unsettled by the racist killings, Bradford, who is Black, said she doubts she’ll ever go back.
“I won’t even send my kids up there anymore,” she said. “My nerves are bad.”

Penny Jones told The Associated Press in a phone interview that she worked at the store, located a few blocks away from her home, until a few months ago.

“I’m just waiting to hear about my co-workers that I used to work with,” Jones said. “I don’t know if it’s safe to move about the neighborhood.”
Jones added that she was “feeling awkward, scared.”

A national board member of the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, Rudolph McKissick, was in Jacksonville on Saturday when the shooting occurred.

“As it began to unfold, and I began to see the truth of it, my heart ached on several levels,” said McKissick, who is a Baptist bishop and senior pastor of the Bethel Church in Jacksonville.

The neighborhood of the shooting is known as Newton. “It’s a Black neighborhood, and what we don’t want is for it to be painted in some kind of light, that it is filled with plight, violence and decadence,” McKissick said.

The shooting took place within hours of the conclusion of a commemorative March on Washington in the nation’s capital, where organizers drew attention to the growing threat of hate-motivated violence against people of color.

Reached by The Associated Press on Saturday evening, march attendee and Jacksonville native Marsha Dean Phelts said learning of the shooting was “a death blow.”

“It hurts,” Phelts said by phone while on a charter bus home from Washington. Many fellow bus riders began hearing about the deadly shooting in their community, just before they all boarded to make the long journey back, she said.

“It’s a neighborhood, a Black community that we come out of,” said Phelts, 79, who is Black. “It’s where our college is, Edward Waters University.”

LaTonya Thomas, 52, who also was riding a charter bus from the march home to Jacksonville, said she wouldn’t allow the shooting to completely dampen her spirits. But she did feel sadness.

“We took this long journey from Jacksonville, Florida, to be a part of history,” she said. “When I was told that there was a white shooter in a predominantly Black area, I felt like that was a targeted situation.”

The attack on a shopping center in a predominately Black neighborhood will undoubtedly evoke fears of past shootings targeting Black Americans, like the one at a Buffalo, New York, supermarket in 2022, and one at a historic African Methodist Episcopal church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015.

The Buffalo supermarket shooting, in particular, stands apart as one of the deadliest targeted attacks on Black people by a white lone gunman in U.S. history. Ten people were killed by the gunman, who has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The shooting happened one day before the 63rd anniversary of one of Jacksonville’s most notorious racist incidents, “Ax Handle Saturday.”

A group of Black protesters were conducting a peaceful sit-in at a city park to protest the Jim Crow laws that kept them out of white-owned stores and restaurants. That’s when they were attacked by 200 members of the Ku Klux Klan, who hit them with bats and ax handles as police stood by.

Only when members of a Black street gang arrived to fight the Klansmen did the police intercede. Only Black people were arrested.

Underperformance will not be tolerated, expectations are high – Tinubu tells Ministers

At the inaugural meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu charged ministers to look beyond titles and offices and stay focused on the day-to-day task of their individual and collective contributions to the transformation of the economy for the upliftment of Nigerian households.

Held at the Council Chambers of the State House in Abuja, the President told the new ministers that the hopes and aspirations of 200 million fellow Nigerians rested on their daily actions and that he will relentlessly provide the focused leadership required to stop failure in its tracks so that sustainable progress can be achieved.

These were contained in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), Chief Ajuri Ngelale dated August 28, 2023.

“We shall evolve a homegrown re-engineering of our finances, a reimagined stewardship of our resources, and we will let the economy work for the people of this country. There are so many things we can and will do. Yes, some cynics will say it is impossible. But in your own dictionary of service, everything is possible, and it must be possible,” the President exclaimed.

Emphasizing that anyone thinking that appointments are fixed term appointments are mistaken, the President expressed confidence that the carefully selected cabinet members know that his government is a new one with a new approach and a new mandate to deliver for Nigeria without any lamentation or excuses.

“We have the talent. We have the level of intellectual capacity required to turn this country around. We will make sure that the country is on the right path to succeed on behalf of more than 200 million Nigerians who rely on us,” the President affirmed.

President Tinubu noted that the country would rely on the experience, skill, intellect and networking of those that had been appointed to make headway in the challenging times, and failure would not be explained away under his watch.

“You and I know that expectations are high, and these are tough times. We must work hard and move ourselves to create a buoyant economy that will serve Nigeria. We have an employment rate that is unacceptable, and we are facing threats from climate change. In order to turn things around, you have been selected to perform your utmost best. Our policy implementation will reform the economy, ensure inclusive growth, and strengthen security for peace and prosperity. Without security, there can be no investment,” the President said.

Humbled by the mandate God had given to him, the President reminded his cabinet that he is only one man and that their innovative thinking to solve problems will shape his leadership as a President who listens.

“It is in your hands now. I am ready to listen and to cooperate. I am ready even to be corrected. Only God is perfect. You have been asked to fetch water from a dry well. The challenges are great, but we will deliver for Nigerians. I am happy to be the captain of this vehicle.”

“It is a great commitment that you have made to the country. Since your inauguration as a minister, you have become a servant for the people, serving all of the people, all of the time,” President Tinubu concluded.

Nnamdi Kanu declares, “I won’t beg for my freedom.”

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned Indigenous People of Biafra leader, has informed the federal government that he will not beg for his release after being found not guilty by Justice Binta Nyako of an Abuja Federal High Court.

This was stated in a letter from Kanu’s lead attorney, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, dated August 25, 2023. Our correspondent received the letter late that evening on August 28, 2023.

Ozekhome had expressed worry on the appalling state of Kanu’s detention facility when it was in the Department of State Services’ care.

The attorney asked the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory High Court to appoint a Magistrate to tour the detention facility.

Kanu claims that pleading for his release at this time will be disrespectful to the memory of the late Pa Mbazulike Amechi, who despite his advanced age and failing health made numerous trips from the South-East to Abuja to ask the Federal Government to carry out his last wish, which was met with the greatest contempt and was not carried out.

These were the high points of the discussion during the meeting between the IPOB leader and his lawyers and family, according to a statement issued by Kanu’s counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor titled, “Update on our routine visit to our indefatigable client – Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, at the Headquarters of the State Security Services, Abuja, where he is still being illegally and unconstitutionally detained in solitary confinement.”

Ejiofor said, “Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu used the opportunity offered by the visit to extend his heartfelt gratitude to all people of good conscience and groups calling for his release. He however, observed that many people may not have understood the peculiarity of his case, but proceeded to urge us to clarify that he has been effectively and validly discharged by the judgment of the Court of Appeal, delivered October 13 2022, which said judgment also prohibited his further trial and detention. Therefore, there is no charge pending against Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu before any court as of today.

“Furthermore, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unequivocally stated that begging the Federal Government to release him at this point is an insult to the memory of late Pa Mbazulike Amaechi, who despite his age and ill health, repeatedly travelled from the South-East to Abuja, begging the Federal Government of Nigeria, to honour his dying wish, which request was treated with greatest disdain by the Federal Government, and was also not honoured.

“Thus, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is of the firm view that he does not need to beg the FGN to release him. The Court of Appeal has already made a pronouncement in that regard and that pronouncement has remained sacrosanct till date.

“Therefore, the call every person of goodwill should make in the circumstance of his continued illegal detention, is for the Supreme Court to set down a date for the expeditious hearing of the appeal filed by the Federal Government, as provided for in the Criminal Appeals Practice Directions of the Supreme Court.

“We visited our indefatigable Client – Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, today, the 28th day of August 2023, to brief him on the various intervening actions taken by the legal team ably led by Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN, to address pertinent concerns affecting his welfare and failure of the SSS to avail him of his medical records.

“To this end, an application has been made to the Honourable Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory by our erudite Lead Counsel – Prof. Mike Ozekhome SAN, to appoint a Magistrate that will visit and inspect the SSS facility/cell where Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been held in solitary confinement since June 2021 till date, in pursuance to the relevant provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

“Following the SSS refusal to avail Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu with his medical records, as directed by Hon. Justice Binta Nyako, in the judgment delivered on July 20 2023, our erudite lead counsel, Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN, was compelled by this brazen disregard to an order of Court by the SSS, to initiate a contempt proceeding against the State Security Service and her Director General, for this gross violation of positive Orders of Court.”

Kiss Scandal: Spanish FA Boss Mum Begins Hunger Strike To Protest Son’s To ‘Witch Hunt’

Angeles Bejar, mother of embattled Spanish Football Association President, Luis Rubiales, has reportedly locked herself in a Spanish church and declared a hunger strike in protest of the “inhuman witch-hunt” of her football chief son, reports The Mirror.

This is the latest in the scandal of an unsolicited kiss with Spain striker, Jennifer Hermosos, during the Women’s World Cup trophy presentation.

Despite the outrage, the 46-year-old claimed the kiss was  “consensual” but the player insisted she never consented to a kiss on the lips.

In a press conference called last week to address the issue, Rubailes sensationally refused to resign from his post with the Spanish FA  threatening legal action against Hermoso for defamation.

Mass resignations within the federation have followed, with Spanish women’s head coach Jorge Vilda’s entire coaching staff announcing their departures over the weekend until the matter is resolved.

Meanwhile, the football governing body, FIFA,  provisionally suspended Rubailes for 90 days, a development that has now forced the football chief’s mum to go on hunger striker.

The Mirror further reported that the retired hairdresser began her protest at the Divina Pastora de Motril church in the Andalucia coastal resort of Motril east of Malaga where the suspended Spanish FA president grew up.

Angeles, whose husband is a former mayor of Motril, was said to have vowed to continue  her action until her son received “justice.”

She has also demanded Jenni Hermoso tell the “truth” about the kiss that led to Rubiales’ provisional suspension by FIFA.

Tragedy: Bride Slumps, Dies on Wedding Day In Oyo

A 28-year-old Nigerian woman, Rebecca Oyedotun, has died after she slumped on the eve of her wedding day.

Rebecca and her fiancé, Abiodun Oluwadamilare, were set to wed on Saturday, August 19, 2023, in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, but she died at the hospital on Sunday, August 20.

It was gathered that the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, graduate, and her friends were having her bridal shower ceremony on Friday, August 18, when she slumped at 10:30 pm.

She was reportedly rushed to LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, where she was revived, but her condition did not improve until she gave up the ghost in the early hours of Sunday.

“Everything was set by Friday, the cows had been slaughtered and the meat fried, every necessary preparation was made, there were a lot of people coming and going to rejoice with us, the groom and his people had come from Abeokuta,” a sister-in-law of the deceased, who did not however mention her name, told our correspondent at their residence at Caretaker area, on Friday, in the presence of the father of the deceased, Evangelist Moses Oyedotun.

She further revealed that the parents of the groom had in fact slaughtered their cow in Ogbomoso as Abiodun is their only child, not knowing that tragedy was ominously lurking in the corner.

“We had bought ‘ewedu’ to be used, ingredients had been ground, and in the morning of Saturday, amala (yam flour paste) was made, rice was ready, the venues were set, but the ceremony was never held as the bride was never available,” the sister-in-law added.
