Grammy Created ‘Best African Music Performance’ Category Because Of Me – Burna Boy Boasts

Nigerian Afro-fusion artist, Damini Ogulu, known as Burna Boy, has implied that he played a role in the Recording Academy’s introduction of the new “Best African Music Performance” category at the Grammys, suggesting that it might be due to his influence.

Burna Boy’s album “Twice As Tall” earned him the “Best Global Music Album” award at the 63rd Grammy Awards. He expressed in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times that he feels a sense of responsibility for the creation of the new African music category.

He questioned whether the newly established “Best African Music Performance” category would carry significant prestige, raising the point of whether it might be viewed as a consolation prize.

He stated, “I do feel somewhat responsible for the new ‘Best African Music Performance’ category, which is nice. At the same time, what is it really? Is it a consolation category? Will it hold as much prestige? I’m waiting to see.”

It’s worth noting that the Grammys introduced the “Best African Music Performance” category in June. This category encompasses various genres of music from the African continent, including Afrobeats, Afro-pop, Amapiano, High Life, Fuji, and more.
